In the complex anatomy of medical education, Semler found itself at a critical inflection point. Their learning platform had become increasingly restrictive as their product portfolio expanded. The organization needed to evolve from a one-size-fits-all approach to a sophisticated, internally-hosted learning ecosystem capable of adapting to diverse training requirements.
In the intricate landscape of medical education technology, our mission crystallized into a comprehensive system overhaul that would redefine how healthcare professionals engage with learning content. The project's scope encompassed a sophisticated matrix of deliverables:
3 distinct device experiences (desktop, tablet, mobile)
Multiple user personas
25+ unique user flows
9-month delivery timeline
I served as the sole designer, orchestrating the full spectrum of experience architecture, research, and prototyping initiatives. Our ensemble included a product manager charting our strategic course, a marketing manager maintaining market pulse, two front-end engineers bringing technical prowess from Ukraine, and a program manager ensuring operational harmony.
Critical Constraints:
Limited stakeholder visibility
Cross-cultural team distribution
Technical literacy variations
Full internal hosting requirement
Legacy system limitations
Key Performance Indicators:
65% desktop usage (1024-1440px resolution)
Task difficulty score: 2.2/5
First-attempt success rate: <70%
Our research revealed three main problems users faced. Time management was a major pain point - users couldn't pause their training sessions or know how long they would take, making it especially difficult for busy medical professionals.
The interface itself was too complex, with four different views to toggle between and too much information crammed into each screen. Finally, learning flow was constantly interrupted because users couldn't easily track their progress, review past material, or retain key information.
"How might we create a learning environment that empowers medical professionals to master complex procedures at their own pace while maintaining high standards of medical training?"
